    There is always a pre-flash when you shoot in TTL mode. It allows your
    camera/flash to work out the best flash settings and does this while the
    shutter is still closed. The second flash is the one that’s going off
    either as the shutter is opening or closing to light the scene. You can
    fire your flash in manual mode to stop the pre-flash but then have to work
    out the power settings yourself.

    the first flash is the flash trying to determine how much light is going to
    have to be flashed. the first flash doesn’t affect the photo in any way 🙂
    just the second one

    As long as the key light is brighter than the light in the background, the
    key light will “mask” the light trails to a point. I use the word mask
    because the background light is still spilling on to the sensor, the key
    light is just brighter and over powers the back ground light. In first
    curtain, the chance for subject movement during the duration of the shot is
    increased allowing more light overlap. With second curtain you reduce the
    chance of subject movement during the key lights exposure.

    Doesn’t it matter whether the flash illuminates the scenery at the
    beginning or at the end of the exposure? Movements of the models head would
    bring the light effects on her face in both scenarios. I learned the effect
    of 1st and 2nd curtain sync by flashing a car moving in my direction with
    headlights switched on in the dark. Flashing 1st curtain would show the car
    and the headlight trail continues in driving direction. Flashing 2nd
    curtain leads to the car “pulling” the headlight trails.

    on topic I think this rear curtain sync, can’t be explained better than
    this, I know there was an episode on Digital Photography One on One with
    Mark, when he explained this, but it wasn’t that obvious(in the photos)
    because of the faster shutter speed.

    I have to disagree. You said “leaving no time for additional background
    light exposure” but 2 seconds of background exposure will look exactly the
    same whether the flash fires at the beginning or the end. It makes no
    difference except for the “direction” of the light trails. That’s the only
    reason to use rear curtain over front curtain. Photographers use rear
    curtain so the light trails seem to follow the moving object instead of
    preceding it.

    Your answer has 2 possible explanations to the result intended in the
    video. 1st (masking): here there is no difference whether it is 1st or 2nd
    curtain 2nd (movement): That is true, but it is not what the video says is
    the cause.

    how did you do it? when i set my camera to rear curtain sync, two flash
    fires. in the beginning and end of the exposure?

    Grims, This isn’t rocket science. Yes there will be overlap on the girls
    face. But since the girl’s face is lighter colored than the dark BG The
    flash at the end of the exposure drowns out the weaker light. We wouldn’t
    even see the Xmas lites if not for the black BG. It’s called contrast.

    Correct, but I meant that there is no additional time for further
    background exposure after the model has been exposed by the flash. I’m
    thinking of it in terms of layers, where she is the final layer with rear
    curtain. Now I know intuitively there should be no difference in the images
    – and I don’t disagree with you at all – but I’d like to test this theory
    for fun to see if it really does make a difference. In any case, I
    completely agree that this is a bad example of rear curtain sync.
